Hong Kong, 17 February 2025

Our annual charity event, The Green Earth Night Walk 2025 was successfully held last Saturday (15 February) in Pak Tam Chung, Sai Kung. About 500 participants walked from day to night, enjoying a low-carbon and low-waste eco-journey.

The kick-off ceremony was jointly hosted by Mr. Steve WONG, Assistant Director (Waste Management) of the Environmental Protection Department and our Board of Directors including Prof Alexis LAU, Chairman; Mr. David LO, Vice Chairman; Prof Wing Mo LEUNG, Board Member; Ms. Sheila TANG, Honorary Advisor and accompanied by Mr. Edwin LAU, Founder and Executive Director of The Green Earth and Dr. Rico Wong, Deputy Director of The Green Earth.

In the welcoming remarks, Mr. Edwin LAU stated that we will face even more environmental threats as the US has pulled out from the Paris Agreement again to cut its greenhouse gas emissions and that would impact the whole world. Meanwhile, Hong Kong and the world have recorded the warmest year in 2024. Therefore, The Green Earth will make good use of the funds raised via the Night Walk to educate the public, students, and businesses that we must all act immediately to tackle these challenges.

Mr. Steve WONG also gave the opening speech and said that the Environmental Protection Department has strengthened the recycling facilities and strives to transform waste into sustainable resources. He appreciated The Green Earth’s efforts in public education on cherishing resources and zero waste lifestyle, promoting Hong Kong to become a green city and boosting citizens’ eco-awareness.

Echoing the theme of this year's event, a 3 km family journey for a relaxing walk has added to The Green Earth Night Walk 2025. There were several parent-child game activities where families could unleash their senses and learn about nature. Participants also enjoyed barefoot experiences fostering a deeper connection with the natural environment.

Meanwhile, our green education team stationed at various checkpoints to introduce our mountain friends and explain the stories behind Leave No Trace. Another interactive activity let participants become little veterinarians, diving into the health challenges faced by cattle. When night falls, participants learned the negative impacts on light pollution and viewed the starry sky with the aid of telescopes.

The event adhered to the principle of zero-waste and encouraged participants to bring along their reusable tableware and water bottles to enjoy the exquisite vegetarian snacks and beverages. This simple green practice showed participants how to adopt a low-carbon lifestyle. As a signature annual event, The Green Earth Night Walk 2025 has minimised the impact on the environment. The amount of waste generated was merely 10.15 kg with 23.63 kg of recyclables collected. This impressive result proves that waste reduction at source and not relying on disposable items can be further promoted in various mega events in Hong Kong.

The funds raised from the Night Walk will support The Green Earth's efforts on promoting sustainability education and a zero-waste lifestyle. The Green Earth would like to thank all our guests, sponsors, volunteers, and participants for their kind support and look forward to working with more eco-companions for a sustainable future.
