Walking in the City Lights In 2016, the Hong Kong government introduced the “Charter on External Lighting” to address the growing challenge of light pollution. But has this “Pearl of the Orient” lost some of its shine under the glare of excessive lighting? This guided tour takes participants to Sai Yeung Choi Street in Mong Kok, a vivid snapshot of Hong Kong’s lighting story. By walking through this bustling district, participants will experience the city’s dazzling lights firsthand while reflecting on the environmental impact and energy waste behind them. The tour is both an observation and a reflection. It invites everyone to appreciate the beauty of Hong Kong’s nightscape while rethinking the balance between urban brightness, sustainability, and responsible development.
