Under the guidance of AFCD masters, we build eco-trails by hand and work together to reduce the wear and tear on the trails by helping with simple maintenance.

Volunteers pre-determine the trail alignment and the position of the logs.

Push the iron bars into the holes drilled in the logs, fix the logs to the ground, and then backfill with topsoil.

Wooden steps are completed!

Volunteers in teams followed the AFCD master’s instructions to move the boulder with bamboo poles.

Position the boulders correctly and fill gaps with smaller rocks for stability, then backfill with topsoil.

Stone steps are completed!

Drainage channels need to be cleaned regularly to divert rainwater and reduce erosion on the trail.

The drainage channel blocked by sediments was reopened after being cleared by volunteers.

Tourists may create shortcuts in the hills for convenience, which can lead to increased soil erosion due to loss of vegetation if not restored promptly.

Volunteers used dead wood and other materials to prevent further use of the shortcut.

Volunteers learn to weave the netted rock nets.

Filled stone assemblages are placed in areas prone to severe soil erosion.

Assemblages can retain some of the sand and soil washed away by water flow, thus replenishing lost topsoil.

6. Investigation of trail problems

The volunteer team also needs to learn to observe and record the problems of watercourses and trails, measure and compare the severity of trail problems in a scientific way.

7. Leave No Trace education

The volunteer team assisted the public engage in the programme. In the picture, people were invited to join the “You Give a Hand” programme to help the AFCD carry materials for trail maintenance up the hill.

The volunteer team also explains the concept of Leave No Trace and provides information about sustainable trails to the public.
