本頁圖片/檔案 - img-01When people use the countryside in ways that exceed its environmental capacity, the environment will face significant impact.

Exploring the countryside inevitably brings human impacts. The natural landscape in the countryside will be scarred if everyone leaves a trace there. If we disregard the environment and use these areas in a level and ways that exceed their “Carrying Capacity”*, the natural ecosystem will gradually become depleted and adversely affected.

As visitors, we visit the countryside for the beauty of nature and high-quality experiences. To sustain the “health” of the environment, protect the habitats of diverse species, and ensure that future generations can enjoy nature with the same quality, we need to learn and practise the principles of “Leave No Trace”.

* Environmental Carrying Capacity — Geographically, it refers to the maximum capacity that a natural ecosystem can carry without being damaged.

Unauthorised shortcuts leading to soil erosion

Vegetation will be damaged if visitors open up unauthorised shortcuts for taking photos or convenience. When the hillsides lose their vegetation cover, soil erosion will occur as rainwater will directly wash along the trails.

Picking and climbing damage plants

Stepping on or climbing over vegetation to take photos, picking flowers and plants as props for photos, or taking them home, will seriously threaten plants’ survival.

Light a fire anywhere

Campers often start campfires on the grass for better camping experience, leaving the ground scorched and bare. It can take several months for grass to grow again.

Smoking

Some smokers cannot change their habit when picnicking. Cigarette butts are the common rubbish in the countryside. It is illegal to litter cigarettes in the countryside, and unextinguished cigarette butts may cause hill fires.

Feeding wildlife

Feeding wildlife affects their dietary habits and may lead to conflicts between humans and animals.

Littering

Visitors leave litter in the countryside after picnic. The litter is scattered across hillsides and bushes, which affects the hygiene of the countryside and may accidentally attract wildlife to swallow plastic waste.
