The history of LNT

Leave No Trace (LNT) is a set of ethical principles that advocates reducing the impact and harm of human activities in nature.

In 1960s-70s, the number of people visiting the countryside of the US had increased significantly. The increase of countryside visits led to growing disturbance to the natural environment and habitats. Many historical heritage and soils were also damaged to different extents. Therefore in 1980s, the US government, scholars, organisations for nature conservation and hiking launched the “Leave No Trace” campaign to educate the public the value of respect to the nature and to promote minimisation of negative impacts brought by leisure activities to natural habitats.

Leave No Trace does not just literally mean “leaving no trace in the forest”. Behind the scenes, it promotes a transition from mentality to action in reducing environmental impacts. It is both a conservation spirit and a set of practical principles. The principles also represent the attitudes and ways for getting along with nature.
