Book Introduction

Hiking and mountaineering are upward activities that often cause us to overlook the trail beneath our feet.

Mountains are mountains, and although trails are man-made, they are more complex than they appear. Whether in the initial planning and construction phase, in the restoration and maintenance phase, or simply in use, if we neglect our responsibility to care for nature, trails can become “scars” on the mountains. We want to connect with nature, but we may inadvertently damage it.

Ideally, trails should be sustainable: their surfaces must be able to withstand usage, be self-restoring, integrate seamlessly with the natural landscape, and protect the surrounding environment. This book records the journey of a group dedicated to conserving Hong Kong’s trails. It explores the “sustainable trails” in Hong Kong, covering everything from the history of trails to the planning, design, construction, maintenance, and education. We aim to restore the damaged trails, seeking ways to preserve their beauty and ensure their longevity. It becomes clear that we are not only responsible for creating trails but also for protecting them. Everyone has a role to play in protecting the trails by “hand”, achieving “leave no trace” and ensuring they remain sustainable and enduring.

Let us first take a look at the trails, then blend them into the mountains in the most natural way — returning to nature. Together, let’s observe, then obscure, and protect Hong Kong’s hills and wilderness.
